Confirm the P71 configuration and Windows build
This guide covers ThinkPad P71 machine types 20HK and 20HL. Lenovo’s P71 specifications list seventh-generation Core i7 or Xeon E3 v6 processors, Intel HD 630/P630 graphics, and configuration-dependent NVIDIA Quadro options. Identify the actual hardware and installed Windows build before selecting a package.
The P71 User Guide describes hybrid and discrete graphics modes. Keep the existing configuration in view; changing BIOS graphics mode is not a routine prerequisite for a driver repair. A shared download heading mentioning Windows 11 does not establish P71 operating-system support. Check the model-specific requirements, not just the broad package title.
Use the requirements of the affected package
Display, flicker or black-screen problems
Check the affected display, cable, input and available resolution first. For covered Windows versions, Microsoft’s Task Manager comparison helps distinguish a likely display-driver issue from an incompatible application. If the fault began after a driver update, consider an available rollback before another replacement.
Lenovo’s DS121038 graphics package and N1UDG17W README explicitly include P71 20HK/20HL. This inspected release lists Windows 10 version 1709 or later, with 64-bit specified by the support page, and contains NVIDIA and Intel components.
- Obtain the matching replacement before removing the installed version. The specific installation note for N1UDG17W requires removal of a previous version, despite generic overwrite wording elsewhere in the document.
- If removing both graphics components, follow the README’s NVIDIA-before-Intel uninstall order; reversing it can cause a blank display. This is an uninstall rule, not a universal Intel-first installation rule.
- Follow the documented combined or separate installation path and restart. The README does not prescribe NVIDIA Custom/Clean Install for every update. Remove NVIDIA HD Audio first only for the stated case where its update fails.
The README also documents the transition to DCH packaging and obtaining NVIDIA Control Panel from Microsoft Store when absent. These are package details, not reasons to change firmware mode or install an arbitrary newer graphics branch.
Touchpad, TrackPoint or keyboard symptoms
Separate pointing-device faults from keyboard keys and hotkeys. DS502229 and the N23GZ21W README explicitly list P71 and Synaptics Pointing Device. Version 19.3.4.229 is a checked package example, not permission to substitute an ELAN driver.
This README recommends uninstalling the current Synaptics driver before updating. Download the replacement first, then follow its targeted removal and reboot procedure for that device, install the package and restart as required. It does not instruct deletion of every keyboard or pointing device. UltraNav models do not need a separate TrackPoint driver.
The shared README lists Windows 10 64-bit version 1607 or later and Windows 11 21H2 or later, while referring model/OS support to Lenovo’s marketing materials. Confirm the P71’s supported configuration separately. For keyboard-only faults, check enabled-state, physical condition and the applicable hotkey documentation rather than assuming UltraNav is keyboard firmware.
Audio output or microphone trouble
Check the selected playback or recording device, volume, mute state and whether one application or the whole system is affected. Use Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance for the installed OS before removing software.
The P71 PSREF identifies Realtek ALC3268 audio. DS502145 and the N22A115W README explicitly support P71 and Realtek High Definition Audio 6.0.9239.1. Its shared OS list includes Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11 21H2 or later, subject to model-specific OS support.
This package provides a normal update and restart path. Its separate uninstall section is not a requirement to remove all Realtek or Dolby software before updating. Use targeted removal only when the matching instructions or a diagnosed repair call for it; preserve working components while investigating the affected output.
Prepare firmware updates separately from Windows recovery
The checked P71 BIOS document DS121301 links N1TUJ38W, BIOS 1.44 / N1TET70W, a Windows 10 64-bit utility. Review the relevant release changes before deciding to flash.
The README requires both AC power and a charged battery. Do not shut down or suspend during flashing. After updating to version 1.31 or later, rollback below 1.31 is blocked; the document also records an earlier 1.12 security floor. Preserve custom settings and keep the BitLocker recovery key accessible when encryption is enabled. Do not casually change OS Optimized Defaults or other boot/security settings.
Windows System Restore concerns operating-system files, settings and installed software. Do not rely on a restore point to undo firmware programming or recover a failed BIOS flash. It also does not replace a backup of personal files.
Investigate persistent faults without losing the baseline
Clean boot for suspected background-software conflicts
Use Microsoft’s complete clean-boot procedure when ordinary checks point to a software conflict. On a managed workstation, coordinate with IT. Record the original service and startup states before changing them.
- In System Configuration, hide Microsoft services before disabling the remaining services. Keep advanced boot options unchanged.
- In Task Manager, note which startup items are enabled, then disable those items for the test. Save work and restart.
- Repeat the failing task. Re-enable services and startup items in groups to isolate a conflict; temporary loss of functionality can occur during the test.
- When finished, follow Microsoft’s normal-startup restoration section and re-enable the items disabled for testing. Preserve the record of any settings that were already intentionally disabled.
Hardware diagnostics and support records
The P71 User Guide’s diagnostics section describes Lenovo Vantage hardware scanning and saving its logs for support. Use a tool compatible with the machine and OS. If supported preinstalled UEFI diagnostics are available, follow Lenovo’s startup instructions; a missing F10 tool is not itself a failed hardware test.
Keep the model, OS build, affected device, old and new driver versions, exact error and test result together. Use an applicable official update for a documented reason, then retest one change at a time. This is more useful than repeatedly removing unrelated drivers.
