Troubleshooting Common Driver Issues on Lenovo ThinkPad L470 (Type 20JU/20JV)

Start with the exact L470 configuration

This guide covers ThinkPad L470 machine types 20JU and 20JV. Before changing a driver, record the device name, installed driver version, Windows edition and system architecture. The 20JU/20JV driver archive is a starting point; check each package’s official compatibility list and README before installation.

A shared L470 name does not make every package interchangeable. Lenovo’s platform specifications include multiple wireless configurations. Match the installed adapter as well as the machine type and operating system.

Common driver problems and checks

1. Wi-Fi disconnects or missing networks

  1. Check that Wi-Fi is enabled and airplane mode is off. Test the same network with another device before assuming the laptop driver is responsible.
  2. In Device Manager, expand Network adapters and record the adapter name and driver version. Lenovo’s DS120924 package identifies the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 for L470 types 20JU/20JV. Its R0IN120W README lists driver 20.70.30.1 and Windows 10 64-bit version 1607 or later. Match the full requirements; a generic requirement for “22.40 or newer” does not establish compatibility.
  3. If you need to reinstall a network driver, save the compatible Lenovo package offline first so that you can recover connectivity if Windows does not reinstall it automatically.
  4. Use Microsoft’s network troubleshooting steps before Network reset. Reset is a last step: it removes adapters and their settings, and you may need to restore VPN software, virtual switches and network profiles. The Windows 10 path is Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.

2. Bluetooth devices do not pair

Check the accessory’s charge, range and pairing mode, then turn Bluetooth off and on. If an existing pairing fails, remove that device and pair it again. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide has separate Windows 10 and Windows 11 instructions; follow the section for your installed system.

If Device Manager shows an error, inspect the Bluetooth adapter’s properties and note the error code. Select a Lenovo Bluetooth package matching that adapter, your machine type and Windows version.

3. TrackPoint or touchpad problems

The L470 User Guide directs you to Control Panel > Mouse to check whether TrackPoint, the trackpad and gestures are enabled. Identify the pointing device before choosing a driver, and use a package that explicitly lists your type and Windows version.

Brief TrackPoint drift after startup, resume or prolonged pressure can be normal. For a worn cap, follow the guide’s replacement instructions.

4. Display flickering or driver errors

Check which display adapters are installed before selecting graphics software. For flickering, Microsoft recommends observing Task Manager: if it flickers with the rest of the screen, the display driver is a likely cause; if Task Manager stays stable, an incompatible app may be responsible.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, check whether Roll Back Driver is available in that adapter’s Device Manager properties. Otherwise, follow the compatible Lenovo package’s installation instructions. Use targeted update or reinstall steps appropriate to the fault; routine DDU cleanup and blanket disabling of driver updates are not prerequisites.

5. Battery readings or short runtime

Distinguish an inaccurate charge estimate from reduced battery capacity or heavy power use. Check battery health, active apps, brightness and the current power plan. Install power-management updates only when their device and OS requirements match your system.

Lenovo’s Battery Q&A explains that a battery gauge reset improves the estimate of remaining charge; it does not restore battery runtime. If the gauge is inaccurate and your Vantage version offers the function, follow its instructions. Regular full discharges are not required to maintain a lithium-ion battery.

The L470 manual’s power troubleshooting section describes a power-button hold of four seconds or more for an unresponsive system or certain startup failures. That is not a routine battery-calibration procedure. Forced shutdown can lose unsaved work; use the instructions for the actual symptom, and never interrupt an active firmware update.

Driver installation and maintenance

Review updates before installing

  • Use Lenovo’s official support information or the updates offered for your device in Lenovo Vantage. Read the compatibility list, changes and installation requirements for each selected package.
  • Record the working driver version and change one relevant component at a time so that you can check the result.
  • Back up important files. Where System Protection is available, create a restore point before major software changes; a restore point is not a backup of your personal files.

Follow the package’s installation method

Do not assume every update requires removing the old driver first. Follow its README, including any explicit uninstall requirement and restart instruction. Keep the installer available until you have confirmed the device works.

Keep Windows servicing in mind separately from driver availability. Standard Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; extended security update programs and editions with separate lifecycles have their own terms. A downloadable driver does not establish that an operating system is still supported or that the PC qualifies for Windows 11.

Further troubleshooting

Use Device Manager to identify the fault

Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Check the affected device’s status, error code and Driver tab. For a manual driver update, choose Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers and select the extracted compatible driver folder. Follow the package’s own installer instead if its README requires that method. Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions also explain update, reinstall and rollback options.

Diagnostics and BIOS settings

  • Lenovo Solution Center ended support in April 2019. Use Lenovo’s current diagnostic guidance to select an alternative that supports the installed Windows version.
  • Record your current BIOS settings and confirm access to your BitLocker recovery key (if enabled) before considering a reset; restore defaults only when the Lenovo L470 User Guide calls for it for your specific problem, because boot-setting changes can prevent startup or trigger BitLocker recovery.

When to seek service or consider recovery

Contact Lenovo support or an authorized service provider if hardware diagnostics fail, the computer has physical damage, or the same fault persists after the appropriate checks. Record error messages and changes already tried so that support can assess the problem.

Windows recovery is a separate decision. Before using Reset this PC, back up your files and confirm access to your BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled. Keep my files removes apps and settings; Remove everything also removes personal files. Do not use a reset as a routine driver update.

Official documentation checked on October 2, 2026. Historical package and manual dates belong to their sources; this review date does not make archived drivers newly released.
